First Night Out in the City - Room to make the big mistakes

From a Blog I wrote Tuesday, June 22, 2010
A lot of people ask me why I moved to New York. Having completed 5 years here now, its fun to remember the path that has led me to the place I am today. But that’s a totally different blog…How did I make the decision to move to a place where I didn’t know anyone that knew anyone? One of my favorite sayings is “80% of life is just showing up” – Woody Allen. Sure, tons of people do it – leave their comfort zone to pursue a dream or to prove that they can accomplish something bigger than themselves. But tons of people don’t. I won’t discount the fact that I was 5 years younger, without any anchors, less wise and fearless beyond my current comprehension. Thinking back on it, there was a core ideology that I subconsciously lived by – without any reservation or worry. It went a little a something like this: Be ruthless. Be strong. Get dirty, filthy dirty. Be audacious. Get poor. Get off your ass. Be dangerous. Be scared. Get bitched out. Be pro-active. Be powerful. Get rich. – Nothing and no one was going to get in my way and I kept my eye on the ball at all times. Because why not? One day I might wake up with the anchors that let me go in the first place. The commitment, the kids, the mortgage, the yacht on the South of France. While I wake up today making decisions with less of a raw edge than I did in 2005, the question, “Do you ever see yourself moving back”? has only one answer. I move in one direction, and that’s forward towards happiness.
